Throughout the 1970s, a young journalist named Linda Kuehl interviewed more than 150 people with the intention of writing a biography about Billie Holiday. Kuehl died in 1978 without those interviews getting published, but her recordings would later become the raw material for this extraordinary approximation to the life of Billie Holiday. Too often we are presented with a simplistic and sensationalist version of Billie Holiday, a tragic victim of her own eccentricities. These unedited interviews offer us a much more profound and intimate glimpse into her versatile personality, and Kuehl supplements the interviewees’ testimonies and confessions with details obtained from the archives of various health institutions, court transcripts, royalties liquidations, shopping lists, postcards, and private correspondence.
